Finding a lost Trackable

TravelFleas customer Sail4luv sent us this cute story from this past weekends geocaching expedition. While exploring the caches of Honeymoon Island Florida, 9 year old Ty was beyond excited to find a trackable in a geocache they discovered in this local state park. Realizing the TB was not logged as being in this cache, we did some research and contacted it's owner walk-away-renee. The owner was thrilled as she thought it had gone missing and made this post on geocaching.com "Yay! My trackable was found in this cache so I'll officially dropping it in it so sail4luv can pick it up. I cannot express to you how happy I am. This trackable has been officially MIA since August 2012 so I created another proxy expecting the original to never be used again. I'm so glad to see I was wrong. Anyways, I hope to make a find for this cache one day. Today is not the case."
Ty was mainly excited since it was a trackable and an alligator (ok mostly because it was a toy alligator...) and can't wait to find a cache to send this gator on it's way. The TB owner was happy to allow us to add a TravelFleas tag to go Along for the Ride. Soon this gator will be on the hunt again. If you want to follow the travels of "Crikey Fundraiser Geocoin", log onto geocaching.com and find him at TB4AX5N.

Halloween Broomstick Ride

Halloween can be a very scary time of the year for geocachers of all ages. You have to navigate through dark woods with whispering ghosts lurking behind each and every tree, brushing off big spiders with clinging cobwebs and blood sucking mosquitoes, hoping to find the geocache quickly before the sun goes down.

Just as things become downright frightening, your heartbeat races, as you sign the log with a shaky scribble, you jump as you see a horrifying sight in the light of the full moon of what appears to be a wicked witch on a broom out to get you! You relax when you realize it is just your friendly TravelFleas™ going “Along for the Ride” on a broomstick from cache to cache with a witch cat as a friend.

Time to run and get out of the dark and scary woods! Happy Spooky Geocaching!

Please let us share in your Geocaching and TravelFleas™ experiences.  To see your Geocaching “TravelFleas™  Sighting” featured on our website, email your story and pictures to admin@travelfleas.com

TravelFleas Sighting in Pirate Lair

You hear it all the time, geocachers and pirates seem to have a lot in common. Both like to hide treasure, use clues to describe where their hide is, and challenge other buccaneers to find it. Geocachers are a lot nicer of course. Just find the cache and have fun instead of all that plundering and pillaging.
The West Coast of Florida has seen their share of pirates and their share of geocaches. Legend has it that pirate Louis Aury operated out of Anclote Key and buried treasure on Honeymoon Island in the early 1800’s. Honeymoon Island is a Florida State Park now and the only treasure seekers are geocachers and nature lovers.
Beth K sent us this great shot of her TravelFleas™ tag going “Along for the Ride” on Tapley, Pedernales Pirate #2 which was in the cache named ½ Way to Paradise when we wrote this blog. As you walk along the Osprey Trail searching for the cache and hoping to find this pirate Trackable, you can imagine yourself side by side with Louis Aury hearing tales of his exploits while searching for the right place to hide his loot. Who knows, maybe you will find a bit more on Honeymoon Island than just a geocache……..
Thanks to Florida’s Fabulous Treasures for their pirate lore.

TravelFleas Tags are great signature items for small Geocaches

Geocaching‬ TravelFleas are great signature items for small geocaches.
A customer sent us a picture of this innovative “Coconut cache”. A pill container is squeezed into a hole drilled into a coconut, then hung from some local flora and fauna “Florida Style”. While there is not much room for more than a log book, this customer’s TravelFleas‬ tag fit nicely inside to leave their mark as a sig...nature item. TravelFleas tags are a great way to let everyone know you are a part of the global sport of geocaching. Being able to squeeze into small caches is a nice advantage for TravelFleas. A pill bottle in a coconut is an interesting place to drop off your personalized tag to let future cachers know you were there even if the log book gets wet, lost or changed out.

Historical Annapolis MD

A geocacher sent us this great shot near the cache “Acton Up” in Annapolis MD. They said this view is a very short walk from the cache and were able to remain inside the park near GZ to take the picture. The roots of American history abound in Annapolis. While walking in the footsteps of George Washington, you are also walking in the footsteps of other geocachers, as you absorb the scene in front of you from this iconic geocache. We would love to see your “View from a Geocache” featured on our website. Please email your story and pictures to admin@travelfleas.com

Greek Sons, American Countrymen

A faithful TravelFleas™ follower sent us this “View from a Geocache” located in Tarpon Springs FL. while enjoying a great October day near the cache “Greek Sons, American Countrymen”. During their Geocache hunt, they took this picture of a monument dedicated to the local servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice to their country. This park is located in Klosterman bayou and serves as the backdrop to the yearly Epiphany celebration. What a great place to have a Geocache!

TravelFleas train for Extreme underwater Geocaching with Geocrashers

As progress moves forward through kickstarter to fund the pilot for the Extreme Geocaching TV show “Geocrashers”, TravelFleas have begun training for one of three possible pilot episodes. As described by producer Jon Racinskas, option 1 is called “Rainbow Thermal Vents”. “The team travel to Arquipélago dos Açores, Portugal in search of a geocache that was placed beside a hydrothermal vent 1.2 miles below the surface of the North Atlantic. To get there they’ll need a Russian Mir submersible and a group of deep-water explorers. Along the way, they’ll learn about the unique life forms that inhabit one of the most extreme environments on the planet. (This cache has never been found in the ten years since it was placed.)”

The TravelFleas submarine captain shown here has spent numerous hours exploring the ocean, seeking new adventures, and all the while making plans to go “Along for the Ride”. We hope Jon plans on using a more substantial sub for his extreme geocaching adventure ;-)

To present extreme geocaching at it’s finest to the world, producer Jon Racinskas has issued the call to all geocachers to help get this TV pilot created, and out in front of network executives. TravelFleas met Jon at GeoWoodstock XI and were impressed with his passion for this project. Please view this link to kickstarter and see if you can lend a hand in getting this exciting new TV show off the ground, and into your Television. As Jon says on his kickstarter site; “Travel. Adventure. Science. History. Geocaching. It’s the travel show for adrenaline junkie nerds!” Geocrashers Kickstarter project

Geocaching in the footsteps of Columbus - British Virgin Islands

Sand between your toes, cold drink in your hand, warm sun on your face with Caribbean breezes blowing through your hair, how could this get any better? Geocaching with TravelFleas, that’s how! A customer sent us this shot of their TravelFleas tag near the cache at the Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda, British Virgin Islands named Cache Nap. Columbus sailed through here in 1493 on his second voyage to the new world. Now TravelFleas can claim to have passed through Columbus’s footsteps. Get your TravelFleas tags today and start your voyage of exploration.

Geocaching in Space, the Final Frontier

The most remote geocache (but not in the world..) is located on the International Space Station. Few will ever get to search for this cache, and since a DNF is not an accepted astronaut acronym, any cacher that makes this journey will be required to post a smiley! While we do not have a picture of the astronaut that boldly went where no geocacher has been before, we can imagine that their EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity) might have looked like this :-)

Geocaching in Medieval Times

A customer recently sent us this story about their trip to France and this view from a geocache that takes us back to medieval times.
"Our recent holiday brought us through the Burgundy region of France. Spending a night in the town of Vezelay allowed us the chance to both enjoy the UNESCO World Heritage historical sites and Geocache at this interesting location. The medieval walled town of Vezelay had its beginnings in the 9th century. Visiting the Basilica on the top of the hill was awe inspiring knowing that we were standing at the same location that launched religious crusades in the 1100's and 1200's.
The next morning we headed out to Geocache. Walking in the shadows of the ancient northern wall of the town my thoughts drifted, imagining what it must have been like to have lived in the medieval times. As we neared the cache, the imposing turret that guarded the entrance to the town loomed into view. Ports in the stone turret through which guards could view attackers or fire weapons were constant reminders of how dangerous life was then.
Finding the cache, I placed a Geocaching TravelFleas™ tag in the container, leaving a piece of my personal history to stay in this beautiful town. As we walked back to our hotel, I thought I saw a Knights Templer on horseback in the distance, sword raised and flag cracking in the wind, ready to defend the religious artifacts at the Vezelay basilica. Shaking the vision from my head, I realized my life had been enriched by the experience beyond a simple geocache."

View from a Geocache in France

Everyone knows geocaching takes you to new and exciting places from around the corner in your hometown to exotic destinations abroad. The vistas that await the lucky geocacher can be anywhere from mundane to spectacular. “Katpusskitty” sent us this picture from her recent trip to France. She said the climb to reach the cache was rather challenging, but the view was breathtaking. She left behind a TravelFleas™ tag in the cache as a memento of her visit along with her own trackable “Flea on a Mission”. We would love to see your “View from a Geocache” featured on our website. Hubble Space Telescope discovers Geocaching constellation

Geocaching astronomers are happy to announce the discovery of the TravelFleas™ constellation using the Hubble Space Telescope. For years they thought this astronomical wonder was a part of Canis Major (commonly known as the Dog Constellation), but now they realize this new constellation was simply going “Along for the Ride”.

Geocaching TravelFleas™ discovered in Egyptian Tomb

We can tell from the inscription on this Egyptian tomb that a mummified TravelFleas™ tag lays inside. The Egyptian practice of taking their possessions with them to the afterlife indicates this TravelFleas™ tag went
Along for a different kind of Ride.

TravelFleas™ were once hunted by ancient man as depicted in this recently discovered cave drawing. Luckily modern man only hunts TravelFleas™ using a GPS or their smart phones, hoping to discover one in a geocache or going “Along for the Ride” on a trackable.

Geocaching Trackables TravelFleas sightings - Cajun55's trip to Alaska

“Hello TravelFleas,
We are back home. Alaska is one cold place to visit in December. I am planning to go back in the summer. :) I cached at -14 degrees Fahrenheit.
Most of the people had not heard of travel fleas. There were about 20 people at the flash mob (GN64F1) and I only had 12 travel fleas with the event tracking code.
Should’a ordered more. :) :) This was done in the dark. Temp was -19 Fahrenheit and very windy….don’t know the chill factor. Do know that exposed skin hurt!
A story you will appreciate. My husband dropped a TF in a cache without attaching it to a TB. Someone found it and contacted me. They offered to attach it to a TB they were releasing. It was a pleasant lagniappe. I thought it would just sit somewhere gathering dust. oh, sorry….lagniappe is a little something extra, like the ink pen you included with my order.
In Alaska I rode thru a mountain, the tunnel was 2.5 miles long. there are two times when 2.5 miles is longer than anywhere else: walking to the gas station in freezing rainy weather, gas can in hand and when you are driving through a tunnel when you don’t know how long it is and it has a sign that says ” If light begins flashing get to the closest Safe House as quickly as possible. They have been having earthquakes lately. They are on a fault line. Boy did that sunlight at the end of the tunnel look good. Then yikes….we have to go back thru that tunnel to get home. But wait…the tunnel is only one lane wide and the walls are bare rock. That tunnel has three waiting lines. one going in each direction and a train.
And mountains….Anchorage sits in a bowl of mountains with water on one side. My son took me up on a mountain at night and Anchorage spread out before me a lit up. Have you see Los Angeles in the movies at night? It was like that. 180 degrees of lights. I had no idea how big Anchorage is. I had only seen the mountains in the eastern US, Maryland, PA, etc. I was born and raised in south Louisiana where the overpass on I-10 was as high as you got unless you were on a bridge. So I gazed on the mountains mouth gaping OMG! huge is too small a word.
There was snow on the ground but the only snow that fell was the three flakes I saw on the way to the airport. They were however under a blizzard warning so After I left they likely got that snow I kept looking for. But I got home to some snow on the ground…still none falling :)
Moose…I hear they are to Alaska like deer are to Maryland….plentiful and pesky. Well they must have heard that a Cajun was coming to town. I saw one moose and that one was in captivity. You know the saying a Cajun will eat anything that moves and somethings that don’t? Well I guess the moose must have :)
Alaska is off my bucket list, but I will definitely be going back because it will always be in my heart.
Shirley aka Cajun55
