You hear it all the time, geocachers and pirates seem to have a lot in common. Both like to hide treasure, use clues to describe where their hide is, and challenge other buccaneers to find it. Geocachers are a lot nicer of course. Just find the cache and have fun instead of all that plundering and pillaging.
The West Coast of Florida has seen their share of pirates and their share of geocaches. Legend has it that pirate Louis Aury operated out of Anclote Key and buried treasure on Honeymoon Island in the early 1800’s. Honeymoon Island is a Florida State Park now and the only treasure seekers are geocachers and nature lovers.
Beth K sent us this great shot of her TravelFleas™ tag going “Along for the Ride” on Tapley, Pedernales Pirate #2 which was in the cache named ½ Way to Paradise when we wrote this blog. As you walk along the Osprey Trail searching for the cache and hoping to find this pirate Trackable, you can imagine yourself side by side with Louis Aury hearing tales of his exploits while searching for the right place to hide his loot. Who knows, maybe you will find a bit more on Honeymoon Island than just a geocache……..
